Six of the Best...

6 weeks and 60 seconds after our last game and White Roding 45s kicked off the New Year against Newport. The 60 seconds were the most important as we stood in silence and side-by-side supporting the Heads Up initiative of mental health. It is a topic close to us as a team and needs no explicit repetition other than to be continually weaved into the same conversation as physical well-being. With 18 in the changing room desperate to play, the Gaffer had a hard job to keep enthusiasm in check for those that were struggling with injury but eager to be involved.

The game started at a frenetic with Lucy and Holly replaying the Stortford Swift days with a goal each inside of 10 minutes and Molty driving home a left footer on his debut. The low winter sun played havoc with seeing anything in the air, as well as the Gaffer signalling for 1st half substitutions as getting game time into players, working off mince pies and exploring options for the upcoming Semi Final were critical, but still our dynamic formation stayed the same. Holly nicked another before the 45 minutes were up. The 2nd half was a much more controlled affair with a further flurry of rolling substitutions. Dave Dawson was cruelly denied a penalty before the Dion Dublin of the team (equally comfortable in defence as in attack, as well as appearing in his own BBC daytime property programme) lashed home his first goal this term. Dave East was then rewarded for an industrious display with his 2nd goal in 3 games. At the death Millsy went close with 2 attempts on goal, but was thwarted by the host's keeper. So the final score was 6-0 and whilst we were not at our best, it was a sign of things to come.

5 games gone and we have matched our league performance of last year in less than a 1/3rd of the games. The season overall reads P9 W5 D2 L2. We have another 10 games to play, possibly 11, so I am targeting double figures for the Win column, otherwise it will be another sort of "Six of the Best!"
