Much-maligned, occasionally described as autocratic but eventually regarded as one of his genre’s greats, Alfred Hitchcock not only directed proceedings from the sideline, but also afforded himself cameos in his own productions.
And so it came to pass that after many-a-false-dawns, the Gaffer finally took to the field of play in a match against Shenfield after another Hitchcockian moment.

The game itself took place at the hallowed Marks Hall Lane pitch with a freshly-rolled pitch looking luscious, new dugouts installed and an expectant crowd of double figures having to wear sunglasses in the warm Autumn weather.
The match got off to a nervy start when Molty mistook the early kick off time for the meet-up time and just made kick off, but had to forgo his usual pre-match routine in cubicle 2. Nerves were quickly settled when Holly pops up with goal no8 in 3 games. Unfortunately due to a media blackout, we have no footage of the game and no one can remember what it was like. The same could not be said for The Judge whose arcing, curling, dipping effort from the corner of the box shortly after made this look like an open-and-shut case.
The middle of the match became a battle. The offside trap faired well, but less so the fitness of the players who succumbed to injury and illness. Judges (back), James (Delhi Belly), Steve Martin (ankle), John Deamer (little toe) and Molty with dizziness. The visitors pegged us back after 2 silly mistakes.
Hitchcock’s seminal masterpiece is about a man who suffers from such a debilitating condition, with the sensation of being very high up. Vertigo can be overcome and our journey from bottom of the lowest Division to top of the Premier in 2 years has been meteoric enough to cause nausea in some.
On came the Gaffer in an unfamiliar left-wing role. 15 mins, 2 touches, 1 assist and 3 goals later he departed following a completed Hat Trick for Holly and a first for Deamer (with his good toe). The crowd applauded, not just for the match-winning minutes, but relieve the pins-and-needles in their hands.
In the closing minutes, Holly hit his 4th, Dom smashed home from a tight angle, Molty went close and From the distance of John Deamer’s bruised toe, he somehow contrived not to double his tally.
it ended up 7-2, along with other results, gave us the lofty position of top team in the County at this early stage in the season.
Chicken and Chorizo stew for afters. Video company complained to.
