A different type of team talk...

Being part of a 45s team, means that we remember the 1970s when football on TV was Saturday lunchtime with Saint'n'Greavsie, evenings with Jimmy Hill and the occasional Sunday with Des Lynam. Like the presenters and pundits, one thing that we could be certain of whoever we supported, it was a team festooned with magnificent moustaches.

Beards and stubble maybe fashionable now (even Dean like a bit of face fuzz on his Tinder dates), but it is the "hairy caterpillar" that should be the focus of our attention for now.

Mo-vember is 20 years old this year. Starting in Australia it initially raised money for the RSPCA before finding its current home helping Men's Health. Fast forward to 2019 and Mo-vember looks at suicide prevention and cancers in the demographic that is hardest to reach with a message (as I know with my halftime chats!).

This post is not about growing facial hair or raising money this coming month... the players and club will support you if you're up for it.

Instead, this is a different "call to help."

In the past 12 months, those close to the Gaffer have been blighted by the 2 male-only cancers that Mo-vember raises money for: Prostate which claims a life every 45 mins - that's 2 men every football match and Testicular which is prevalent in both our age group and that of our sons. These along with Bowel cancer (another common cancer in men) are treatable with great prognoses if the symptoms are caught early.

So what has this got to do with WRFC45s, apart from the potential of a Terry McDermott moustache? If by reading this post you check yourself out and seek advice if you find something, or by playing football you get yourself fitter and reduce the risks and perhaps enjoy the fresh-cooked post-match meals as part of a healthier diet, then this will be a victory greater than any results on the field.

Along with enjoying the game, we quite like your company socially and would like you to be fit to play not just this season but for many years to come. Please take 5 mins to read the latest from Mo-vember and WCRF to understand how to help yourself. Further details are on the Twitter page.
